Body pulled from Boardman Lake

TRAVERSE CITY — Authorities pulled a man’s body from Boardman Lake but Grand Traverse County sheriff’s officials refused to provide more details about the investigation.

Divers and local firefighters spent Saturday afternoon combing the lake for a missing boater. Sheriff Tom Bensley confirmed Sunday evening that they found the boater’s body Saturday evening.

“We recovered him last night and we’re making notifications,” he said.

City police initially responded to the call, but Capt. Mike Ayling said the sheriff’s department took over the investigation. He said the initial report involved a man last seen going under the water.

Bensley said officials would release more information today. He refused to answer further questions about what happened, the man’s identity or why such details would be withheld for almost two days after the incident.

“It’s Sunday night and I’m talking to you at home,” he said when pressed for more details.
