Primary election registration deadline Monday

TRAVERSE CITY — Inara Kurt thinks it’s important for everyone to vote in their political party’s primaries.

“In northern Michigan, the primary decides who is going to be elected to office,” said Kurt, the Voter Service Chair for the League of Women Voters Grand Traverse Area. “In November, you get to choose one or the other. Who you’re going to vote for is decided at the primary.”

Monday is the last day to register to vote in the Aug. 5 primary. The Republican 104th state House race has the most contested local seat, with eight candidates running for the nomination.

Residents can register at the offices of the Secretary of State, county clerk, or township or city clerk. They should bring a photo ID, or if they don’t have a photo ID they can sign an affidavit that they don’t have one.

Acceptable photo IDs include: school IDs, a driver’s license, a federal or state government issued ID, current passport, military ID or tribal ID.
