Authorities: Man in crash was drunk

CEDAR — A Cedar man who suffered injuries in a crash on a Leelanau County road found himself jailed on accusations he drank alcohol and smoked marijuana before he got behind the wheel.

The crash occurred Wednesday when the Cedar man, 58, drove his pickup truck north on Maple City Road, came to a stop at the M-72 intersection and then into the path of a pickup truck driven to the east by a Lake Ann man, 39.

Sheriff’s deputies and emergency personnel arrived shortly after 1:50 p.m. to find two smashed pickup trucks and the Cedar man pinned inside his vehicle. Undersheriff Steve Morgan said they also found evidence the man may have been intoxicated.

“He had open intoxicants in the vehicle and admitted to drinking and smoking marijuana about an hour before the crash,” Morgan said.

Cedar firefighters pried the man from the mangled wreck and sent him to Munson Medical Center for treatment.

The Lake Ann man wasn’t injured.

Deputies arrested the Cedar man at Munson on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

They booked him into Leelanau County’s jail. Morgan said the suspect has yet to be arraigned on a charge.
