WASHINGTON, Pa. — Shawn Blackwell improved to 4-0 as the Washington Wild Things beat the Traverse City Beach Bums 5-2 Thursday night in a Frontier League contest.
Blackwell worked six innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
The Beach Bums scored their two runs in the fourth when Kevin Taylor doubled home Yazy Arbelo, who had walked, and then Jeff DeBlieux singled in Taylor.
That would be the extent of Traverse City’s scoring.
Stewart Ijames hit his third home run in two days to cut the gap to 2-1 in the fifth. The Wild Things took the lead in the sixth. Maxx Garrett led off with a home run and then Daniel Poma singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Reliever Nate O’Bryan walked Garrett Rau and had him picked off first, but Poma raced home during the ensuing rundown.
Washington added two insurance runs in the seventh when relief pitcher Clayton Ruch issued two bases-loaded walks.
The Beach Bums committed three errors, leading to two unearned runs. Alex Phillips suffered the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 5.1 innings.
The Beach Bums open a three-game set at Southern Illinois tonight. Tanner Tripp (1-3, 4.25) will get the ball for Traverse City, Tyler Lavigne (3-2, 3.60) for Southern Illinois.
