Accused deputy is member of Kalkaska school board

KALKASKA — A Kalkaska County sheriff's deputy who faces sex crime charges in Otsego County is a member of a Kalkaska Public Schools' board of education.

Aaron John Popa, 37, of Kalkaska, appeared today in 87th District Court for arraignment on three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. A former jail inmate told investigators she had sexual relations with Popa in 2006 during a prisoner transport.

Popa serves as vice president for the Kalkaska Public Schools' board of education. Superintendent Lee Sandy learned about the accusations this morning and called them "a complete surprise."

"I think it's important that until proven guilty that this is just a charge," he said. "Aaron has been outstanding member of the community."
