Opportunity to serve, get paid

TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation is working with local nonprofit organizations to set up paid internships in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau counties for qualified applicants who seek to make a difference in their community.

“We believe in our nonprofit work in our community,” foundation Grant Making and Program Officer Gina Limbocker said. “We want to provide students opportunities to get involved in the nonprofit sector.”

The foundations teams donors, nonprofit organizations and volunteers to work in the community. Currently the Grand Traverse Area Children’s Garden, The Great Lakes Children’s Museum, and the Benzie Conservation District are offering paid internships for eligible students or recent graduates who are interested in serving their community.

“Interns can build their resume, gain experience for a job and find out whether facilitating programs for children is in their future,” Great Lakes Children’s Museum Administrator Martha Belfour said.

Museum officials seek an intern to coordinate the Mad Science Monday program with hands-on science activities and facilitate the interactive story times and art programs.

Mike Treadwell is program director for the Children’s Garden at the Traverse Area District Library. He wants to find a high school student with an interest in horticulture or agricultural education to help run the gardening program.

“This is part community garden and part summer camp,” he said. “The summer position will help students connect with what they want to do in college, and an intern will have real hands-on experience in leading young people.”

The gardening program works with more than 100 children to teach about gardening, nutrition, conservation, and preserving the environment.

Foundation officials said local internships provide valuable work experience, networking opportunities, and give qualified candidates an edge in the job market while they explore career opportunities.
