TRAVERSE CITY — Public health officials and area dentists will hold a news conference today to discuss the benefits of Traverse City’s water fluoridation program.
Grand Traverse County Health Officer Wendy Trute and Medical Director Michael Collins will lead the conference to to urge city commissioners to continue adding fluoride to water. Health department officials said in a release that 70 years of experience and hundreds of studies from around the world confirm that water fluoridation is safe and effective at reducing tooth decay in children and adults. The officials said opposition — including among some Traverse City elected officials — has grown because of “false and discredited studies found on the Internet.”
The press conference will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the county health department building, 2600 LaFranier Road in Garfield Township.
