---- — TRAVERSE CITY — The son of a senior citizen who was beaten in his Blair Township home said he’s relived to hear of a suspect’s arrest.
Deputies arrested a man, 20, on Wednesday at about 3:30 p.m. at the Grand Traverse County courthouse, sheriff’s Capt. Dave Meachum said. The suspect was visiting the probation-parole office at the time. His identity was not released Thursday pending arraignment.
“I don’t want this guy on the street. If he’ll do it to my dad, he’ll do it to anybody’s dad,” said Roy Loveland Jr.
Roy Loveland Sr., 65, was found badly beaten in his home Monday morning. It appeared an attacker repeatedly stomped on his face and chest, and broke nearly every bone in his face, Loveland Jr. said. He remains in critical condition at Munson Medical Center with a blood clot on his brain and a collapsed lung, Loveland Jr. said.
The suspect faces a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. Authorities used a search warrant to enter his his home and planned to search a vehicle.
Meachum said the suspect is an acquaintance of the victim and investigators are working on several theories regarding a motive for the assault.
Family members believe the attacker wanted revenge on another family member who previously lived with Loveland Sr.
“I think he did it to prove a point: ‘If I can’t get you, I’ll get your family,’” Loveland Jr. said.
Loveland Sr. will undergo reconstructive facial surgery this weekend to repair his eye sockets, nose and jaw. He’ll need dentures to replace 14 teeth knocked out in the assault.
Details of the attack are still fuzzy for Loveland Sr., his son said, but he recalls someone punching him in the face and repeatedly stomping on him. Loveland Jr. thinks his dad may have been sleeping and attacker entered and knocked him unconscious.
Nothing was stolen during the attack.
“It was all out of plain evil,” Loveland Jr. said. “You can knock on his door and he’d not even know you and he’d give you his last dollar.”
