Baseball bat assault suspects due in court

TRAVERSE CITY — Two brothers suspected in a baseball bat assault in front of the Whiting Hotel are due in court.

Traverse City Police Capt. Brian Heffner said warrants for Casey Wayne Brown, 29, of Williamsburg, and Matthew Tyler Brown, 19, of Traverse City, were being processed Monday. They are scheduled for arraignment in 86th District Court today at 9:45 a.m.

Police were dispatched to the Front Street hotel on Friday shortly before 1 a.m. on a report of an assault involving four men. The brothers were looking for an acquaintance and were asked to leave by two people at the hotel, police said.

The suspects left and later attacked the victims as they stepped outside to smoke, police said. The men allegedly punched and beat them with a baseball bat, and also shattered glass on the hotel’s front door.

Heffner said Casey Wayne Brown wielded the baseball bat is expected to be charged with felonious assault. He said Matthew Tyler Brown is expected to be charged with misdemeanor assault and battery and malicious destruction of property for his role in destroying the glass door.
