Benzie's business climate warms

---- — FRANKFORT — These are exciting times for Benzie County’s business community.

Brand new Stormcloud Brewing Company opened its doors last week in Frankfort, and offers tourists and residents alike a fresh option for food and drink in the lovely lakefront community. Stormcloud, along with the new Cru Cellars Michigan wine bar and eatery, are two of several new retail businesses popping up in Frankfort, where officials say demand for store frontage is particularly strong.

Then, there’s the intriguing story of the Platte River Inn in downtown Honor.

The new upscale restaurant, with its sharp-looking frontage on U.S. 31, is the talk of Benzie County, and not just because of the dining experience. Many see the restaurant as a critical component of a long-term effort to breath new life into the village of Honor.

Mary Carroll, president of the Benzie County Chamber of Commerce, said it’s an exciting time to be an entrepreneur in Benzie.

“We’ve got some people who are long-time residents of Benzie County who’ve wanted to open a particular type of business for a while, and they’re finding now is the right time and this is the right place,” Carroll said. “The opportunities, with partners and investors, are falling into place, and they are moving forward with their dreams.”
