Maxbauer critic ousted from GT county parks board

TRAVERSE CITY — A Grand Traverse County parks board member is stepping down from his post because he doesn't live in the county.

"I really don't have much choice," Parks and Recreation Commissioner Scott Robertson said of his resignation.

State law and county policy requires parks board members to live within the county, said Bob Cooney, Grand Traverse County's attorney.

Robertson was a Grand Traverse resident when he joined the board in 2011, but last year he moved to Elmwood Township. Robertson said he still lives in Traverse City, but his new residence is in Leelanau County.

Robertson said at the time he didn't realize the move created a problem.

"I didn't even know that was an issue," he said.

Robertson criticized parks board President Christine Maxbauer, who's also a member of the county commission, for undercutting parks board decisions during a meeting last month. A majority of board members voted to ask for Maxbauer's resignation as parks board president following Robertson's comments.

Robertson said parks officials received an anonymous letter about his residency postmarked Oct. 18, one day after that meeting.

"The very day after I spoke out," he said.

Maxbauer said she had no involvement with the anonymous letter.
