---- — HONOR — Tim Young was all about local food systems long before it became a hot topic.
Young, proprietor of the Benzie County business Food for Thought, has been a tireless advocate for nearly three decades for what he calls fairness in food: a food system that is equitable and which doesn’t rely on paying dirt-poor wages to workers in poverty for the harvest of fruits and vegetables from halfway around the globe.
“We want bananas at 29 cents a pound and pea pods on our salads year-round,” said Young. “Well, there is a negative side to that globalization because it perpetuates poverty for a lot of people. It’s a dark side.”
Young started his business, Food For Thought, in 1995 at a rural, scenic farmstead near Honor. His was to raise awareness about how food is produced as he manufactured jams, jellies and other products from his rural Benzie County worksite.
He also started a national blog called Food For Thought, which he’s been writing weekly for nearly two decades, to foster awareness about food.
The blog is watched by foodies across the country.
These days Young finds himself in an increasingly crowded world. He learned about two weeks ago that national website Huffington Post and restaurant chain Chipotle had launched a national blog about food systems and healthy living.
The name of the blog?
Food for Thought.
