TRAVERSE CITY — A home surveillance video shows a would-be thief foiled by the simple solution to many of Grand Traverse County’s burgeoning larcenies from vehicle: a locked door.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Tom Bensley said detectives seek two male suspects caught on the Sept. 18 video from a Foxcraft Estates home in Garfield Township. The video shows two men dressed in dark and red sweatshirts, respectively, try to open doors to vehicles parked in a driveway and then walk away.
“It’s proof of what I’ve been telling people for years: lock your cars,” Bensley said.
The sheriff’s department logged about 100 reported larceny from vehicle reports since Sept. 1, including inside Traverse City limits. Bensley said the vast majority of the cases involve unlocked cars.
“It’s rare somebody breaks into a car to steal something,” he said.
The Foxcraft Estates video arose after an investigation into a larceny from an unlocked vehicle at a neighbor’s house. Members of the public with information about the case are asked to the sheriff’s department at 995-5002 or the detective bureau at anonymously at 231-947-TIPS.
