---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Alex George, author of this year’s TC READS book, “A Good American,” will speak Tuesday evening at the City Opera House.
The novel, published last year, tells the story of an unorthodox couple, Frederick and Jette Meisenheimer, who leave Germany in 1904 to begin a new life somewhere in America.
Aiming for New York, a series of events leads them to the small village of Beatrice, Mo. There, the music and opera-loving Meisenheimers open a diner and begin to integrate themselves with the local cast of characters.
Narrated by Frederick and Jette’s grandson, James, the book spans three generations.
It is George’s fifth novel and his American book debut. The English-born George studied law at Oxford University and now practices law in Columbia, Mo., where he moved in 2003.
National Public Radio called the novel the Top Summer Read and it won a “Best Book of the Year” citation by the Library Journal.
“Alex George has written a novel centered on three aspects of life that so many northern Michigan residents cherish – good food, great music, and nurturing communities," said Ruth Bay, president of Friends of the Traverse Area District Library, which sponsors the community reading program now in its 12th year.
“The threads of optimism and compassion that can be found in Traverse City are echoed in this story – the story of our neighbors and ultimately, ourselves. Alex George’s visit to Traverse City promises to be as rewarding and entertaining as his writings,” she added.
George also will be interviewed on Interlochen Public Radio on Tuesday morning and speak from 1 to 2 p.m. with high school students in the Front Street Writers group founded by the National Writers Series, Bay said. His Michigan Writers interview with local author Aaron Stander is scheduled to air Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. and Oct. 25 at 9 p.m. on IPR 91.5 FM, Traverse City; 89.7 FM, Manistee' and 90.1 FM Harbor Springs.
The program runs on the side of Interlochen Public Radio: 91.5 FM, Traverse City; 89.7 FM, Manistee; 90.1 FM, Harbor Springs.
The reception for George starts at 6 p.m. and his talk begins at 7 p.m. He will be available for book signing, after the presentation.
Tickets are $15 per person and are available at all TADL locations, the City Opera House, Horizon Books and Brilliant Books downtown, as well as at the door and online at http://www.cityoperahouse.com
