Enrollment up at Northwestern Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY — Michigan’s economy continues to sputter, but the prolonged downturn contributed to an enrollment boom at Northwestern Michigan College.

Stephen Siciliano, NMC’s vice president for educational services, said 1,705 students have enrolled so far for summer classes, a 2 percent jump from last year.

That follows a record-breaking spring semester, which saw 5,193 students enrolled at the college — a 1 percent jump from the same period in 2010.

Culinary arts continues to be a popular draw at NMC. Siciliano said the college also has seen greater interest in its maritime, aviation and renewable energy programs.
