---- — TRAVERSE CITY — City commissioners hope to begin advertising for a new city manager by next week and have one hired by the end of April.
Commissioners agreed to advertise the position for four weeks after Caroline Kennedy, a consultant with the Michigan Municipal League, which will conduct the search, assured them commission the League would meet its deadline of having someone in place when City Manager Ben Bifoss retires June 28.
Mayor Michael Estes and Commissioner Mike Gillman had proposed the commission instead advertise the job for three weeks. Estes said job candidates already have contacted him, including several from out of state.
The tentative timeline, subject to city commissioners’ availability, would have the commission review applications as early as April 8 and schedule interviews for one of the last weekends of the month. The commission would interview applicants on Saturday, and do second interviews on Sunday if required.
That would allow the commission’s new hire to give the standard 60 days notice if he or she currently holds another government position.
The commission expects to firm up dates the first week in March.
