Search for teen called off

LELAND — Divers have called off a search due to darkness for a 16-year-old Lake Leelanau youth authorities believed to have drowned while swimming at Van’s Beach in Leland.

Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Oltersdorf said the youth was swimming in the early evening today close to shore with siblings when a rip tide swept him into deeper water and he went under. The sheriff’s marine patrol, area fire department rescue teams, and the U.S. Coast Guard searched the area from boats and the air early this evening but were unable to locate the swimmer.

Oltersdorf said the search for the boy’s body will resume Friday at first light.
