TRAVERSE CITY — A Denver man faces felony charges in Grand Traverse County after authorities said he sexually assaulted a woman in the Traverse City Holiday Inn.
A warrant request was issued this week for Kent Michael Pettenger, 33, who is charged with three felony counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in 86th District Court. Traverse City police investigated a June 8 incident in which a woman met Pettenger in Holiday Inn when she was headed to her room.
Noelle Moeggenberg, assistant prosecuting attorney for Grand Traverse County, said Pettenger was not a guest at the hotel and was in northern Michigan for "tile work." Court documents state Pettenger offered to show the woman an indoor pool.
"When she got to a room where there was supposedly an indoor pool, there was only a storage area," the document states.
Pettenger threw the victim to the floor and grabbed her by throat, according to the court documents, then sexually assaulted her. The felony charges carry a potential life sentence if Pettenger is convicted.
Moeggenberg said now that the warrant is authorized local law enforcement will contact their Denver counterparts.
"We'll have to wait to notify people over there to pick him up," she said. "I expect it will take a while."
