TRAVERSE CITY — A homeless Traverse City man learned he will spend the next 25 to 60 years behind bars.
Brian David Shanley, 31, was sentenced Friday by 13th Circuit Court Judge Thomas Power.
A jury on Jan. 18 found Shanley guilty of two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
The victim told police she and Shanley were at a friend's home on Shady Lane in July after an evening of drinking when they got into an argument that became heated, court documents state. He forced her onto a mattress and raped her, and bit the back of her shoulder, according to court documents.
The victim testified that Shanley had attacked and raped her 10 days earlier at a homeless camp.
Court documents show another woman came forward with information that Shanley also raped her during their relationship that spanned 2007 to 2010.
Court records indicate Shanley has an extensive criminal background. He was convicted of his third offense of operating a vehicle while under the influence in 1999. In 2003, he was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, and in 2009 he was convicted of assaulting and or resisting a police officer.
