'Off the Wall'

Alden — The "Off the Wall" movie series will screen "Win-Win" on Thursday, Jan. 3.

The R-rated film stars Paul Giamatti as an attorney who moonlights as a wrestling coach and discovers a star athlete through questionable business dealings.

The movie will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Helena Township Community Center, 8751 Helena Road. An optional dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Dinner attendees are asked to bring a donation or food for the meal.

Writers' workshop

Johamy Morales will lead a workshop entitled, "The Writer's Voice," on Thursday, Jan. 3, from 7-9 p.m. at the University Center on Cass Road, Room 214.

Hosted by Michigan Writers, the workshop will introduce basic vocal elements of voice and diction through performance and linklater technique. Participants are encouraged to wear movement clothing and bring water and a yoga mat.

An instructor for theater and comparative arts at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Morales is also an actor, director and writer. She is also co-artistic director/founder of Rabbit Hole Theatre Company.

Michigan Writers will charge $10 for nonmembers to attend workshops, which remain free for members. Participants can join Michigan Writers for an annual fee of $40 payable by cash or check at the workshop.

Women voters

Suttons Bay — The Leelanau Unit, League of Women Voters GTA, will meet at noon Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Leelanau County Government Center, 8527 E. Government Center Dr. Phillip Mikesell, professor emeritus Wabash College, will give a program titled "Election 2012 — Change or More of the Same." For details, call 386-5106.

Fiber arts classes

Traverse City — Notably Natural Fine Yarns offers weekly classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Classes meet from 6 to 8 p.m. at the business, Suite #6 at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Free classes include beginning knitting Thursday, Jan. 17, and beginning crochet or crochet refresher Thursday, Jan. 31. An open studio night also is held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays for fiber artists to work on their projects.
