Traverse City — The Community Cinema Series at the Dennos Museum Center, 1410 College Dr., continues on Thursday, Jan. 3, with "The PowerBroker."

The film tells the story of American Civil Rights Leader Whitney Young who challenged business and political communities and made in-roads where other civil rights leaders could not. It will be shown at 7 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium. Discussion will follow. The Dennos Museum Center galleries also will be open from 5 to 8 p.m.

Middle School gala

Traverse City — West Middle School will host an Arts and Gourmet Gala on Tuesday, Jan. 15th, to benefit the Traverse City Area Public School Art Department, the Family and Consumer Science Department and On The Ground, a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting sustainable community development in farming regions worldwide.

The gala will be hosted from 6 to 7 p.m. in the West Middle School mezzanine.

West Middle School art students will showcase their paintings done completely in coffee and based on the theme of equality. Food from coffee growing regions will be prepared and served by students taking Family and Consumer Science courses. Formal dress is suggested for this evening of music, dancing, appetizers, art appreciation and silent auction of student art.

Choirs enrolling

Traverse City — The Northwestern Michigan Children's Prelude and Dolce choirs are accepting students for the winter session. No auditions are required.

The Prelude Choir is an introductory program for children in kindergarten and first grade. The goal is for participants to learn about their voices and learn basic singing techniques. Rehearsals are held Jan. 24 to March 14. The choir fee is $89.

The Dolce Choir is for students in second and third grade. Singers build foundational music skills and learn a recognizable folk-based repertoire for beginners. The choir rehearses Jan. 10 to May 6 and the choir performs at the NMC Children's Choir winter and spring concerts. The choir fee is $125.

Both choirs rehearse at 6 p.m. Thursdays at NMC. For details or to register for either choir, call 995-1700.
