Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Anyone can toss a plastic bottle, a pizza box or crinkled paper ball into a recycling bin.
Northwestern Michigan College students want environmentally-minded folks to take it a step further and build a model home using recycled materials.
Model houses created for this April 6 event will be displayed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grand Traverse Mall for a friendly competition. Participants are asked to check in their homes at the food court, where awards and prizes of gift cards, gift baskets, and cash will be presented at 1 p.m.
The event is intended to raise awareness and collect resources for the Depot Neighborhood, an energy-efficient, affordable housing community of 10 homes to be built at Eighth Street and Woodmere Avenue. Ground breaking is slated for April 15.
Students are partnering with the Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region Depot Neighborhood to put on the event.
