Leelanau hit-and-run driver sentenced
SUTTONS BAY — A Williamsburg man who drunkenly drove from a Leland wedding and struck a Cedar teenager was sentenced to a year in jail.
Benjamin Craig, 27, pleaded guilty in September to second-offense operating while intoxicated, attempted fleeing and eluding and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. The charges come from a Sept. 1 incident in which a Cedar boy, 14, was struck by a yellow Jeep Wrangler in Leland that drove off.
Leelanau County sheriff’s deputies found the suspect vehicle minutes after the incident driving with a tire shredded to its aluminum rim. Craig was arrested and a breath test showed he had a .16 blood-alcohol content.
An 86th District Court judge on Friday sentenced Craig to 365 days in jail and 730 days of probation upon release, during which he must attend drug or alcohol recovery meetings. He’s eligible for Community Corrections after 180 days.
