Blaze leads police to 192 marijana plants
FIFE LAKE — A light used for a large indoor marijuana grow operation sparked an apartment fire that led authorities to 192 plants.
The Fife Lake Fire Department responded to a structure fire early Sunday at 206 Main St. and found marijuana plants growing in two apartments. Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputies and Traverse Narcotics Team detectives found more throughout the five-apartment house and its basements.
Three residents had to be evacuated and the building received heavy smoke and fire damage.
Authorities discovered electrical cords connected to high-powered grow lights with bare wires exposed. One of the lights is believed to have sparked the fire.
One resident claimed to be a medical marijuana card holder and growing the plants for himself, but TNT was unable to verify. Medical marijuana card holders are only allowed to possess 12 plants.
