Rental car vandalized after fight in parking lot

Traverse City Record-Eagle

---- — TRAVERSE CITY — An early morning, Front Street fight between a Connecticut man and a Traverse City man may have led to vandalism of the out-of-towner’s rental car.

Traverse City Police Capt. Brian Heffner said a passerby reported on Saturday at 2:30 a.m. that two men were fighting in a parking lot near J&S Hamburg restaurant in the 300 block of East Front Street. Officers responded and separated a Connecticut man, 37, and a Traverse City man, 32.

“Neither one (wanted) to pursue charges,” Heffner said.

The Connecticut man told officers he drank too much to drive back to his hotel and left his rental car, a 2013 Nissan Altima A8, parked along Front Street. At 4:27 a.m., another passerby reported a vehicle later identified as the rental car had all its windows broken out, its paint “keyed” and a tire slashed.

“The officer did (identify) the other party in the fight and is attempting to contact him to see if he came back,” Heffner said.

The Traverse City man drove away in his own vehicle after officers broke up the fight. Police seek to interview him and other individuals who may have been involved or witnessed the fight.

“We’re still looking into the reason the fight occurred in the first place,” Heffner said.

The damaged car was towed from the street and the officers are investigating the damage. Heffner said detectives are looking into potential video evidence from security cameras on the restaurant’s property.
