Renowned planner to discuss Eighth Street

TRAVERSE CITY — Robert Gibbs, a national leader in new sustainable town planning and commercial market research, will lead a discussion on remaking what one city official described as Traverse City’s tired, under-performing corridors into economic powerhouses of life and energy.

Gibbs and area planning officials will conduct a walking tour of Eighth Street before Gibbs’ presentation to city planning commissioners today at 7:30 p.m. in the second floor training room at the Governmental Center. The presentation is part of city planners’ efforts to remake and revitalize commercial corridors leading into the downtown, said city Planner Russ Soyring.

Gibbs, a principal in the Birmingham-based Gibbs Planning Group, is a frequent lecturer at national planning conferences and teachers urban retail planning and development at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He authored three books and his firm specializes in applying fundamental retail and merchandising principles to historic downtowns and new town centers.
