Local stores targeted in phone scam
TRAVERSE CITY — City police are investigating a phone scam in which scammers tricked several local retailers into giving out thousands of dollars on pre-paid credit cards.
Traverse City Police Capt. Mike Ayling said local retailers should be suspicious of late night or early morning contacts from callers who claim to be with their company’s corporate office. He said callers asks clerks to help clear up a problem with the store’s credit card machine.
“They’re calling and having them purchase and activate some type of card,” he said.
The callers request that clerks swipe and load pre-paid credit cards with money. Ayling said the callers also request the cards’ PIN numbers and tell clerks that company representatives will be at the store in the morning.
Money Pack, Green Dot Corporation, Incom Universal and Buy Right pre-paid credit cards are being used in the scam.
