Grand Traverse parks board president asked to step down

TRAVERSE CITY — Bad blood continues to boil on the Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation Commission over the board’s president leadership.

Parks commissioners asked Christine Maxbauer to relinquish her post as board president in a 6 to 4 vote during a meeting last week.

Board member Scott Robertson said the parks board was “effectively neutered from within” by Maxbauer, whom he accused of repeatedly using her seat on the Grand Traverse County Commission to undercut the desires and decisions of the parks board.

“The democratic process has been defiled, and quite frankly I’m embarrassed to be a part of it,” Robertson said during the meeting.

Maxbauer said she will not step down. She said that as a county commissioner she considers the county’s overall financial state and information parks board members aren’t privy to when making her decisions.

“The county board has to take a broad view of what’s best for the county,” she said.

Carl Brown, a Grand Traverse County Road commissioner; Kevin McElyea, the county’s drain commissioner; and Alisa Kroupa joined Maxbauer in voting against the request for her resignation.

Maxbauer said her term as president expires at the end of this year.
