---- — TRAVERSE CITY — A new website offers a wealth of information about recreational opportunities in the Grand Traverse region.

The recently launched Grand Traverse Parks and Recreation Network website compiles information about the network’s 24 member organizations’ events and activities, ranging from Camp Daggett to the Grand Traverse Rugby Club.

The site was created to make it easier for the public to take advantage of recreation resources.

“People just didn’t know what was going on,” said Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation Director Jason Jones.

The network was created in 2011 by the county and Traverse City parks and recreation departments, Traverse City Area Public Schools and the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA.

Since the website’s launch, Jones said, other groups have expressed interest in joining the network.

“What we’re shooting for is (for) this to be a one-stop shop for anyone to go to figure out what events are going on in the community,” Jones said.

The site can be accessed by computer or smart phone at

The network this week also announced a free recreation expo and fitness challenge kickoff, scheduled for noon on April 28 at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center. The expo will feature displays, demonstrations and activities showcasing member organizations.
