---- — TRAVERSE CITY — A man who assaulted a woman at a downtown hotel will spend at least six years in prison.
Steven K. Haller, 21, was sentenced Monday in 13th Circuit Court to six to 20 years for charges of assault with intent to do bodily harm and first-degree home invasion. He will serve the sentences — six to 10 years for assault with intent to do bodily harm, and 12 to 20 years for home invasion — concurrently.
Haller pleaded guilty to the two charges after the opening statements of a trial in March. A torture charge was dismissed in the plea deal.
Haller and a woman engaged in consensual sex at her Whiting Hotel apartment in August. He then twice strangled her to a point of unconsciousness and then threatened to kill her because he’d “gone too far” and said she wouldn’t get out the apartment alive, the prosecution said.
The victim escaped to a community bathroom and sought help from a neighbor.
The prosecution dropped a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct before the scheduled trial.
