Staffer resigns over possible misuse of public funds

TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City Area Public Schools employee who officials suspect misused a district purchasing card resigned from her job.

TCAPS Human Resources Executive Director Christine Davis said Mary Gillison, an administrative assistant at West Middle School, resigned in writing Monday.

Davis said officials believe Gillison bought a “personal item” in December with a district purchasing card — a credit card that is authorized to an employee to make purchases through a department account.

Davis would not specify the personal item, but said the district received reimbursement for the purchase in February. She said officials found “several” similar purchases, all of which were repaid.

Gillison could not be reached for comment.

Davis said school officials, as of Wednesday, did not believe the purchasing card activity was illegal because of the subsequent reimbursements.

“But it certainly is an inappropriate use of a district purchasing card,” she said.

Davis said TCAPS officials plan to bring in an outside auditor as they continue to investigate.
