Man critically injured in snowmobile accident

TRAVERSE CITY — An Ohio man was found injured after he lost control of his snowmobile and struck a tree.

Baron Black, 47, suffered head injuries in the Saturday crash, said Antrim County Sheriff Dan Bean. Black struck a tree with a force that cracked his helmet, Bean said.

Black was airlifted to Munson Medical Center for treatment Saturday night and is still in critical condition there.

Black was found on Pinney Bridge Road east of M-66 Highway in Chestonia Township. He was on the Jordan Valley trail, where several accidents occur each year, Bean said.

"We're not sure why he left the roadway," Bean said.

A group of people notified the sheriff's department of the accident. Bean said it was unclear whether they knew Black or had been out with him.

Another snowmobile accident occurred in Koehler Township. Robert John Niester, 45, of Cheboygan, was killed Saturday night.
