TRAVERSE CITY — A captain’s recent retirement also meant new faces took old positions in the Grand Traverse County sheriff’s department.
Brian Giddis was promoted to lieutenant on Dec. 30. For most of his nearly 16-year career, Giddis specialized in crash investigations; now, he’ll oversee the three-deputy team that comprises the crash unit, as well as slew of new responsibilities.
“I’m excited to take on a new role,” he said.
Giddis took now-Capt. Chris Clark’s position after a department personnel shuffle following former detective bureau Capt. Dave Meachum’s retirement in November. Capt. Randy Fewless took Meachum’s spot, while Clark now oversees road patrols.
“Capt. Clark know exactly what he wants from Lt. Giddis because he’s been doing it the last two years,” said Sheriff Tom Bensley.
Giddis, besides assisting road patrol duties, will oversee foreclosure sales, the dive team and the field training officer program. Bensley said Giddis was eligible for promotions in the past, but declined them.
“I’m happy he’s in the position,” Bensley said.
