Mother accused of drunkenly driving child to school

SUTTONS BAY — An Elmwood Township woman is accused of drunkenly driving her 4-year-old child to school.

A Leelanau County sheriff’s deputy on Wednesday morning about 9 a.m. stopped the woman, 32, on South West Bayshore Drive near Peck Road. Authorities said the woman showed signs of intoxication, smelled of alcohol and, though she denied drinking before driving her child to school, did admit she drank until about 2 a.m.

The woman’s blood-alcohol content tested at .08 percent after her arrest and booking into Leelanau County’s jail. A family friend took the child to school.

Sheriff’s Lt. Clint Kerr said the woman is scheduled for arraignment in 86th District Court on Feb. 21. Authorities seek charges of child endangerment and operating while intoxicated.

The woman was released from jail after posting a $100 interim bond.
