---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City police are closing in on three suspects they believe were involved in an assault and stabbing on Northwestern Michigan College’s campus.

Capt. Mike Ayling said detectives believe they have a “pretty good idea” who committed a Jan. 31 assault. The victim, 35, of Indianapolis, Ind., said three men confronted him as he walked from an on-campus apartment building to his car, forced him into a laundry room and stabbed him twice in the back.

The victim was treated at Munson Medical Center for stab wounds and other lacerations. Ayling said police received a promising tip the night of the assault that he believes will help identify the three suspects.

“We’re expecting to make an arrest out of this,” he said

It turns out the victim may greet his assailants when they arrive in Grand Traverse County’s jail; police on Tuesday arrested the victim at the hospital on a drug-related warrant. Ayling declined to release the victim’s name until arraignment in 86th District Court.
