---- — TRAVERSE CITY — A group of thieves snatched a Garfield Township convenience store’s donation jar that was intended for Meals on Wheels, and authorities believe the suspects previously performed the same type of theft.
Grand Traverse County sheriff’s Lt. Brian Giddis said the Sunday night theft at the Barlow Street 7-Eleven unfolded in two parts:
A suspect first distracted a clerk about 11 p.m. so a compatriot could pilfer the money and lottery tickets deposited in the jar. The three suspects — two men and one woman — struck again about four hours later and took the whole jar.
Giddis said the crime bears similarities to a mid-January theft of the same jar at the same store.
“We’re expecting it might be the same people,” he said.
Sheriff’s deputies are obtaining video from the store in order to track down suspects, Giddis said.
