TRAVERSE CITY — A man who died at a local shooting range appears to have shot himself, police said.

Charles Edward Willette, 55, of East Jordan, died at Shooters Indoor Gun & Archery Range in Blair Township on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities found him dead when they arrived on scene shortly after 3 p.m.

Willette was on the floor in a shooting lane when he was noticed by an employee and another visitor, who began CPR.

"It's very clearly a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Grand Traverse Undersheriff Nate Alger said. "No other shooters were on the range at the time of the incident."

Alger said it's not yet clear if the shooting was accidental or intentional.

Willette had been at the range since about 10 a.m., Alger said. He rented a gun that police believe was used in the shooting.

Shooters is owned by Dan Griffith, who also owns Ace Buyers in Traverse City. Griffith did not return a call for comment Wednesday.
