Fire destroys Torch Lake home
RAPID CITY — A fire fully engulfed a home in the Orchard Hills subdivision near Torch Lake before firefighters arrived.
Four fire departments, including one from Kalkaska County, were dispatched to the 11285 Orchard Drive fire on Tuesday about 11:30 p.m. and spent hours fighting the blaze.
Milton Township Fire Chief Jeremy Ball said the fire is not considered suspicious.
“At this point, we’re not able to determine the cause,” Ball said. “We believe it started in the main floor area but we’re not sure.”
Homeowner Marshall Slater, 52, wasn’t in the residence when the fire started and declined American Red Cross assistance. Ball said all firefighters managed to save from the “extensive” fire was an attached garage and a hallway leading to the house.
“We’re probably looking at a total loss,” Ball said.
Milton Township, Elk Rapids, South Torch Lake and Clearwater Township fire departments responded to the fire.
