Locals try their luck on Mega Millions jackpot

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City residents aren’t going to let the chance to win $586 million pass them by.

“I feel lucky. It’s time for someone from Michigan to win something big,” said Shirley Allison as she held up her tickets at the Holiday gas station at Cass and South Airport roads.

The jackpot drawing is tonight at 11 p.m. Allison is hoping for the best, noting she bought a different lottery ticket at the Holiday station a year ago and won $5,000.

“This is my lucky store,” she said.

Other ticket buyers were less confident but felt there was little to lose in buying one ticket for such a large jackpot.

“I’m disappointed they’ve increased the range of numbers. The odds are going to be impossible,” said Traverse City resident Linda Hoath, who still couldn’t resist buying a ticket.

For others, the long odds were more of a deterrent.

"There’s just something about the odds being better for being hit by lightening twice,” said Dave Gault.
