TRAVERSE CITY — The roof of an old, long-vacant bowling alley in downtown Beulah collapsed under the weight of several feet of snow.
The roof brought much of the building down with it Tuesday about 3:15 a.m.
“The snow buildup, because of this unusual year where we don’t get thawing days, accumulation just exceeded the roof system and it collapsed under the weight of the snow,” said Steve Houghton, a building inspector for Benzie County. “It looks like a total loss.”
The roof brought down much of the rest of the building, located on Benzie Boulevard. Utilities have been disconnected, but Houghton warned that other parts of the building could still collapse.
“It was kind of a shock when everybody came into town,” said Mike Mullen, an agent at nearby John Marshall Insurance Agency. “It’s been local talk here, big news for Beulah.”
