Broken tip freezes city thawing efforts

From staff reports

---- — TRAVERSE CITY — A broken part will prevent city workers from thawing frozen pipes under streets and sidewalks until at least Tuesday.

City officials reported at least six homes had frozen water line leads between the main line and what’s known as the curb stop near the sidewalk that they can’t thaw. The problem arose when the tip broke off a hot water tube they insert inside the water pipe to thaw the line. The replacement part comes from Canada and won’t arrive until Tuesday.

Justin Roy, water and sewer maintenance superintendent for Traverse City, said calls about frozen lines are coming in at two to three a day and they are working with home owners, but there isn’t much city workers can do until the part arrives.
