Officials approve Panera building expansion

TRAVERSE CITY -- Garfield Township officials approved an expansion of a building slated to hold a Panera Bread restaurant.

Garfield's planning commission last year approved a 8,500-square-foot building to go on the Hertz rental site on the corner of Franke Road and U.S. 31. The building would host Panera Bread, a St. Louis-based bakery and café chain, as well as an unknown commercial site.

The township’s planning commission approved a request to add another 509-square feet to the retail portion of the building and another 50-square feet to the Panera side, said Garfield planning director Rob Larrea.

“It was over pretty quickly because it was an approved project,” Larrea said.

The developer, Kentucky-based Anchor Properties, is expected to begin construction in the spring.

The site is on prime real estate, said Larrea.

“What we’re seeing is a redevelopment of parcels along U.S. 31 as of late,” Larrea said. “They’re in a prime location and there’s heavy traffic, so they’re in high demand.”
