TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City man accused of negligently, drunkenly, and fatally shooting his girlfriend moved one step closer to trial.
Robert Lee-Allen Caldwell, 33, today waived his right to a preliminary examination in 86th District Court. Judge Michael Haley ordered Caldwell's case bound over to 13th Circuit Court for trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter, discharge of a firearm under the influence causing death, felony firearm and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
Caldwell told police that on Nov. 19 he accidentally shot and mortally wounded Monica June Anderson, 28, in a failed attempt to kill himself. Police couldn't find evidence Caldwell intended to kill her.
Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney accused Caldwell of being “grossly negligent” and intoxicated when he fired the gun. Cooney said Caldwell served his sentence in Leelanau County's jail on an unrelated probation violation charge and is now in Grand Traverse County awaiting trial.
Haley maintained Caldwell's $500,000 bond.
