1st Congressional District forum today

TRAVERSE CITY — The top two candidates for the 1st Congressional District will face off today in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

Former state Rep. Gary McDowell, a Democrat, will join first term Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek in taking written questions from the audience during the moderated forum at 7 p.m. in the Traverse Area District Library's main branch on Woodmere Avenue.

The two candidates, from opposite ends of the Upper Peninsula, are engaged in a too-close-to call battle for votes in the redrawn 1st District. The district now includes Kalkaska, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Benzie, and Manistee counties.

Deputies: Man drove his car into bay

TRAVERSE CITY — Deputies arrested a man who they believe was intoxicated when he drove his vehicle into East Grand Traverse Bay.

Deputies went to the Dock Road boat launch in Acme Township at about 3 a.m. on Saturday. They found a vehicle partially submerged, but the driver was nowhere to be found.

The driver, an 18-year-old Traverse City man, was later located and arrested. He's expected to face charges of drunken driving and leaving the scene of a crash.
