Deputies arrest indecent exposure suspect

TRAVERSE CITY — A Long Lake Township "peeping Tom" drunkenly exposed himself to a female neighbor after she saw him looking through her window, authorities said.

Michael Lee Smith, 24, was arraigned Tuesday in 86th District Court on three misdemeanor charges of aggravated indecent exposure, window peeping and operating while intoxicated.

Court documents state a Lamp Post Lane resident heard a "slapping sound" and looked outside to see Smith with his genitals exposed. He ran away after she went outside, but a Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputy located him laying face down in the grass outside another home.

Smith told the deputy without prompting that he "was lonely" and admitted to exposing himself to the woman, who lives in the same neighborhood. He also said he drank a pint of whiskey and drove before ending up at the house.

A portable Breathalyzer test found Smith had a blood-alcohol level of .16 percent. He was on probation from a 2012 Kent County conviction for third-degree home invasion and aggravated indecent exposure.

Smith is lodged in Grand Traverse County Jail on a 10 percent $50,000 bond.
