Man dies at area shooting range

Witness: 'I saw a gunshot wound to the heart area of his torso'

TRAVERSE CITY — A man died after an apparent gunshot at a local shooting range.

Authorities went to Shooters Indoor Gun & Archery Range near the former Wilderness Crossing building off U.S. 31 in Blair Township shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday. A man there died after an apparent shooting, Grand Traverse Sheriff Tom Bensley confirmed.

Bensley wouldn't provide details or identify the man.

Kevin Cook, who was at the range, spoke with an employee who saw the man down in a shooting area. Cook and the employee went to administer CPR, and Cook found what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

"When I pulled his shirt up I saw a gunshot wound to the heart area of his torso," Cook said.

There was no one else in the immediate area, Cook said. A gun was near the man in a plastic crate the shop gives customers to carry rented guns, he said.

Cook and the employee continued CPR until authorities arrived.

No one answered the phones when a reporter called the range. The range is owned by Dan Griffith, who also owns Ace Buyers in Traverse City. An employee at Ace said he was still at the range Tuesday afternoon. He couldn't be reached for comment.
