TRAVERSE CITY -- High winds whipped up by a late-season storm caused power outages for hundreds of area residents.
Power outages were reported Friday around Mancelona, Central Lake and Kalkaska and in Benzie County, said Consumers Energy spokesman Terry DeDoes.
Outages impacted 128 customers in the Mancelona area, 167 customers in Central Lake and 101 users in Kalkaska as of late Friday afternoon, he said.
The outage forced early dismissal of classes at Central Lake School, which sent students home at 11:20 a.m. Friday, a school official said. The school lost power at around 10 a.m.
Winds gusted up to 35-mph Friday morning at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, said meteorologist Kevin Sullivan of the National Weather Service in Gaylord. Winds were forecast to increase through the evening with gusts expected over 40-mph late Friday, he said.
Conditions are expected to improve, but get colder, for Halloween today and tonight. Sullivan said the area can expect widely scattered showers this evening, but most areas should remain dry. Temperatures were expected to cool into the mid-40s today, dropping into the upper-30s this evening, with west winds of 10 to 15 mph.
"It's going to feel a little raw out there," Sullivan said.
