FROM STAFF REPORTS

CADILLAC -- A part-time Cadillac firefighter died in an off-duty traffic crash.

Thomas Janik, 33, died in a single-vehicle crash on E. 34 Road east of S. 31 Road in Wexford County's Selma Township at about 8:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Janik's pickup truck, traveling west on E. 34 Road, went off the road and struck a tree. Janik was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's not yet known what caused the crash, police said.

Janik worked since 2001 as a part-time firefighter for the Cadillac Fire Department. He also served as an instructor in the firefighter training program at Baker College in Cadillac.
