Police probe rash of business break-ins

Businesses have reported 9 separate incidents

BELLAIRE -- Police hope to solve a long string of Antrim County business break-ins.

Break-ins at three Alden-area businesses were discovered Saturday, marking nine separate incidents throughout the county in recent weeks.

Varying amounts of cash were taken from A Stone's Throw flower shop, The Red Eye Gallery and Up North Kids Bookstore. Doors were forced open in each instance.

Chang Express and Bellaire Auto Repair in the Bellaire area, Carter Candle Shop and Winter Workshop in the Alden area, and Tim's Tire and Off Road Center and One-on-One Sales in the Mancelona area also were hit in recent weeks.

Cash also was taken from those businesses, and the thief or thieves smashed windows and broke open doors to gain access.

Police believe the incidents likely are connected.

"I think probably all of them are related; what we have is either one or two people working it," Antrim Sheriff Dan Bean said.

It appears the thieves targeted only cash in each instance. Police collected limited evidence thus far, Bean said, and no footage of the suspect or suspects was captured because the businesses involved either didn't have security cameras or the cameras weren't working.

"In this day and age we would hope that would happen with a couple of them, but that hasn't happened so far," Bean said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Silent Observer at 231-947-TIPS.
