KALKASKA -- Members of the Kalkaska County Solid Waste Management Planning Committee will meet today to discuss proposed amendments to the county's solid waste plan.
American Waste proposed amendments to allow for the import and export of rubbish from additional counties, as well as facilities to capture energy through a solid waste gasification process. The technology involves heat combustion of solid waste to capture the released gases, then used to drive a turbine and generate electricity.
The committee will continue to discuss the proposed amendments, which must go before the county's townships, the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality before approval. Companies then would be able to apply to build such facilities in Kalkaska County.
The committee will meet at 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Kaliseum in Kalkaska.
